今週の映画の表現は、２０１３年のドラマ映画 Life of a King （邦題なし）に出てきたものです。

The 2013 movie “Life of a King” is based on the story of Eugene Brown.
「２０１３年の映画 Life of a King はユージーン・ブラウン（Eugene Brown）の話に基づいています」
Eugene Brown というのは実在の人物です。
He learned to play the board game, chess, while in prison.
「彼は刑務所にいるあいだ、ボードゲームであるチェスの仕方を習いました」
画面の字幕では、Chess が大文字で始まり、そのあとにコンマもありませんが、chessは普通名詞なので、表記上、小文字で始めます。また、board game と chess は同格なので、chess のあとにもコンマを付けるのがふつうです。
while in prison は while he was in prison の he was が省略された形です。
After his release, he seeks an honest life.
「釈放されたあと、彼は堅気の生活を模索します」
seek は「探す、模索する」という動詞です。
He sets an example for poor teenagers by comparing the game of chess to life decisions.
「彼は、チェスというゲームを人生に関わる決断に例えることで、貧しい十代の若者たちに模範を示します」
set an example は「模範を示す、手本を示す」という意味です。
compare ～ to …は「～を…に例える」です。
life decision は「人生の重大な決断」。
Brown is asked why he went to prison.
「彼はなぜ刑務所に入ったのかとブラウン氏はたずねられます」
「入獄する」という意味なので、prison に冠詞は付きません。go to school の場合と同じ現象です。
Listen for the words “I took the fall.”
「I took the fall. という表現を聴いてみましょう」
I robbed the bank.
「僕は銀行強盗をしたんだ」
Cops came and we all scattered.
「警察がやって来て、みんな散らばって逃げたのさ」
cop は「警察、警官」です。昔、警察官のバッジが銅でできており、そのバッジを付けた人たちということで copper と呼ばれていましたが、次第に cop と呼ばれるようになったという説があります。
scatter は「散らばる」。
And I took the fall.
「そして、僕が割を食ったというわけ」
And then I learned.
「それから、僕は習ったのだ」
What did you learn?
「何を習ったのですか」
I learned the board.
「僕はチェスを習ったんだ」
Your move.
「君の番だよ」
What do you think “I took the fall” means? Is it,
「I took the fall はどういう意味だと思いますか。それは、」
(A) I fell down suddenly
「(A) 私は突然倒れた」
or (B) I was arrested for a crime while others involved went free
「あるいは (B) 関わったほかの連中は逃げたのに、私は犯罪で逮捕された」
この部分にいつもはあるListen again. が抜けています。
The answer is (B).
「答えは (B) です」
If someone “takes the fall,” they are usually the only one taking blame in wrongdoing, even though others are involved.
「もしある人が takes the fall すると、それは悪事を働いた人は他にもいるのに、一人だけが非難されることを表現します」
they are の部分は、１人のことを指していますが、このように they を使うこともよくあります。someone が男性か女性かを特定できないことも理由の１つです。
take blame は「責めを受ける」。
wrongdoing は「悪事」。
